January 9 2016 Thodos Dance Chicago presented at Auditorium Theater the premiere of Melissa Thodos' "Sono's Journey- A Ballet Story" the story of Sono Osato, whose parents ran the concession at the Japanese tea house and pavilion on Wooded Island and who at the age of 14 in 1934 began a fabled career with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, curbed during World War II because of her Japanese-American ancestry. She nevertheless persevered and became important in the dance and entertainment media fields and in career transition for dancers. Sono worked collaboratively with composer Melissa Thodos on the ballet and was present and given a special honor, and the city's proclamation of January 9 as Sono Osato Day. The spectacular performance was preceded by a progran and reception that included words from the Consul General of japan in Chicago at which a special announcement was made. The ballet and evening were sponsored by Sono's family foundation and Project 120. Jackson Park Advisory Council is deeply appreciative of these and all involved and to Melissa Thodos, composer, choreographer, and director of Sono's Journey.
